Refurbishment of Classons Bridge, a stone arch bridge circa 1790 and widened in 1928. The widening consisted of cast insitu concrete decks with steel beams on both sides of the existing structure.

Key Elements

  • Traffic management to divert all traffic and pedestrians from the closed bridge during the works
  • Removal of existing road surface, footpaths and existing waterproofing / Replacement of waterproofing and reinstatement of carriageway and both footpaths
  • Works on the underside of the structure included, removal of concrete to expose the bottom flange of the steel beams, strengthening of same with 20mm flat plates, cleaning, repainting and exposing the bottom flange of all steel beams
  • Repairs to stone arch of the original stone masonry structure
  • Repair and replacement of the existing path under the structure damaged by excessive scour
